Health and Dental Insurance

Health and dental insurance goes hand in hand with each other. Some people may overlook dental insurance and dental care as crucial to one's overall health, but there are reasons why regular dental care benefits health in general. Tooth decay and infection that goes untreated can spread and cause a broader problem. People suffering from TMJ (teeth grinding and joint pain) can experience debilitating symptoms. Early and ongoing dental care for children is essential for their present and future health. Healthy teeth allow you to consume a healthy diet as well.

While some prefer to pay dental expenses out of pocket, x-rays can be expensive, as well as surgical procedures such as wisdom teeth removal and root canals, both very common procedures. Any cavity needs to be treated. Those with dental insurance are more likely to have their teeth cleaned regularly and thus avoid many of the above problems. Therefore, ongoing preventive care through dental insurance is perhaps more important for the majority of people than catastrophic coverage one can receive through general health insurance.

How health and dental insurance works

Dental plans are usually provided by employers who offer a health insurance plan, and fall in the same categories, such as HMO, PPO, and managed care. There are also direct reimbursement plans that, rather than require a premium payment, reimburse a percentage of money paid to dental care. This approach is used because people's dental needs can vary and employers can lose money if they offer a standard health and dental insurance plan for everyone.

A 2000 report by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research found that uninsured children were two and a half times more likely to go without dental care. This statistic suggests that people without health and dental insurance are more likely to avoid treatment unless they can afford it out of pocket or if it becomes an emergency situation.

When looking at a dental plan, you will probably find that the provisions and requirements of the plan are probably less complex that of general health plans. You are also less likely to pay high premiums. Be sure to investigate exactly what is covered when budgeting for your dental care.
