Fortis Health InsuranceFortis Health , an insurance company offering short-term health insurance for people in between jobs, was recently changed to Assurant Health. Fortis Financial is now primarily a European banking and insurance company with global services. Through public offering, Fortis sold its health insurance arm in 2004, and the company became Assurant. The current health insurance company trades on the New York Stock Exchange. Fortis, and now Assurant, offered a convenient short-term health insurance plan for people between jobs or moving, recent college graduates, and people on strike from their jobs. With Fortis Health Insurance, this particular plan could only be used in the short term. In other words, there was no opportunity to transfer the plan into long-term health insurance once the member's life situation changed. However, there are now more options for transition into other plans with Assurant. Plans under Fortis Health InsuranceThe plan as it was under Fortis was reasonably priced and available for single members or family. In addition to being a plan for catastrophic coverage, Fortis Health Insurance (now part of Assurant) offers different deductibles and a percentage paid of office visits and hospital stays after the deductible is met. The short-term plan is convenient because members pay once a month and don't have to notify the company when they plan to stop their coverage. They are only required to stop payment, and the plan expires two weeks later. The maximum temporary time allowed under the plan varies with each state and runs 30 to 185 days. Assurant Health is a more comprehensive health insurer that sells directly to individuals and small groups. Assurant offers individual and short-term health insurance as well as small employer group insurance and insurance for college students. Fortis, previously, and now Assurant specialized in serving people not typically included in major health plans. Assurant also provides health insurance to Americans living abroad and dental/vision insurance to anyone without these benefits in their current health plan.
